5 Causes of Vag!nal Bleeding Between Menstrual Periods

A spot of blood might make you happy if you are afraid of an unwanted pregnancy and it might make you feel devastated if you were hoping to become pregnant. Most of the time it is nothing more than an expected point of your regular cycle. But what if instead it is completely unexpected? What are the reasons you may experience vaginal bleeding when your period is not due?

Bleeding between periods is not normal, and if you experience it you should see your doctor. Following are the most common reasons women experience vaginal spotting at times other than during menstruation.

1. You Could Be Near Or Having Your Period

You may have miscalculated the time of your period, or your period may be coming soon. It’s not uncommon to bleed a little in the days leading up to or following your period. If this bleeding occurred within three days of your period it is probably not a reason for concern, but be vigilant and speak with your doctor if something seems wrong.

2.You Could Be Pregnant

Sometimes a woman spots when her fertilized egg is implanted in the uterus, but this is likely to be no more than a few drops of blood. If you are pregnant, then heavier bleeding can be a sign of distress in your pregnancy.

3.You Could Have Vaginal Cuts or Abrasions

Vaginal abrasions are usually caused by intercourse or sexual play. Certain positions are more likely to cause abrasions, as is the use of sexual toys. If you experience vaginal dryness, abrasions and cuts are more likely to occur. If you experience a small amount of blood after an especially exuberant lovemaking session or if you have been experiencing dryness, this is a possible cause. You are unlikely to find a larger amount of blood if this is the reason.

4. You May Have Cervical Damage

Cervical damage has a number of potential causes. It is unlikely that your cervix will be damaged during intercourse but it is possible. If you use objects as sexual toys it is more likely that you will damage your cervix this way. Usually, however, a damaged cervix is caused by other means such as a sexually transmitted infection (STI) or pelvic inflammatory disease (PID), which normally is caused by an untreated STI.

5. You May Have Cancer or Precancerous Cells

Abnormal bleeding, including bleeding after intercourse and bleeding between periods, can be a sign that you have precancerous or cancerous cells of the uterus or the cervix. Bleeding between periods is one of the earliest signs of both of these cancers, and both of these cancers can go quite a long time without diagnosis. This is why it’s imperative that you see a doctor if you bleed between periods.

While it is not necessarily serious if you bleed between your periods, it definitely can be. Especially since this is a symptom of two kinds of cancer, it is always better to be safe. If you experience bleeding between periods, especially if it has happened more than once, see your doctor right away.
